Grocery store french onion dip is alright, well it's pretty amazing I can't lie. I grew up eating potato chips and french onion dip which is what inspired my homemade version of this kraft french onion dip recipe.
I added caramelized onions and gruyere cheese on top to kind of combine it with a french onion soup blend.
Homemade french onion dip is pretty amazing and can go with any occasion or a go to party dip. The creamy dip is even better the next day, eaten cold or reheated.
Equipment
- Medium or small bowl
- Cast iron pan
- Spatula
Substitutions
For a healthier alternative, greek yogurt can be subsitituted for sour cream on 1:1.
Variations
To make it spicy, add cayenne pepper to your desired spice level, I like to add a little at a time so that it does not become too spicy.

What to serve it with
- Pepper jelly - the sweet & spicy adds great flavor depth that goes perfect with the creamy, savoriness of the onion dip
- Kettle chips - These are better than regular chips for dipping becuase they are thicker and won't break as easy for a solid bite
- French baguette - I like to drizzle some olive oil on them and lightly toast
- Vegetables like carrot sticks or celery
Storage
- Keeps in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
- Freeze in a freezer safe airtight container for up to 1 month.
