What is lox spread?

Lox spread is a cream cheese based mixture of lox or smoked salmon, also made with ingredients like capers, lemon juice, and red onion. The creamy, soft cheese is a perfect match for the salty, smoky salmon.

Lox is associated with the Jewish food culture that is derived from the Yiddish word for salmon, laks.

It also has roots in Scandinavian culture that relied heavily on seafood for their diets and curing or smoking fish was a widely used technique for preserving food.

Jewish immigrants in New York City are largely credited with the genius idea of combining the two into a lox bagel, however.

Wherever you come from, I think that we can all agree, well except for the non fish eaters and then there's the folks who don't like the texture, besides all them; everyone can agree that lox is delicious.

Whether you are celebrating any special occasions like mother's day, baby showers or looking for some more brunch favorites, creating a lox charcuterie board is a fun way to enjoy all of the different flavors that makes lox and bagels so great.

Ingredients for lox charcuterie board and lox cream cheese spread:

Ingredients for a lox charcuterie board
  • Lox or Smoked Salmon - The leftovers from making the lox spread can be cut into thin strips or bite sized pieces and plated on the
  • Fresh Dill
  • Lemon
  • Capers
  • Tomatoes
  • Almonds - I used a spicy dill flavored almond that was really good
  • Red Onions
  • Strawberry Jam - I like to add a little sweetness
  • Pickled Vegetables - I used pickled okra that had a little kick to it and was a great compliment to the salty salmon
  • Bagels - Plain bagels is the obvious choice but I like to get an assortment. Some of my favorites are sesame seed, everything, pumpernickel and onion bagels. Use your favorite bagel choices.
  • Plain Cream Cheese - Highly recommend to get the good stuff fresh at your local bagel shop. Philadelphia cream cheese is the best alternative from the grocery store.

Instructions for lox charcuterie board:

After the lox cream cheese spread is prepared, move on to preparing the rest of your bagel and lox charcuterie board.

Slice the bagels in half and lightly toast, then quarter for a more bite sized portion.

Make sure that when you cut the bagel in half that you do so to create one rounded side and one flat side. The flat side is ideal for putting the lox cream cheese spread and all of the toppings.

The key in my mind to a perfect charcuterie board is to hit on as many textures and flavors as you can. Think something crunchy, salty, doughy, sour, chewy, creamy, sweet.

For crunchy I chose dill flavored almonds. Salty is the lox and pickles. Doughy and chewy is the bagels. Sour is the pickles, capers and lemons.

Creamy is the lox cream cheese spread.

Sweet is the Strawberry Jam.

The most important part is the bagels and lox so everything after that is just a bonus.

To get the most out of a charcuterie board, your favorite toppings are great to add a finishing taste to each bite.

I used fresh herbs and lemon slices with some lemon zest, red pepper flakes and everything but the bagel seasoning are the final additions.
